Dheda Keertan, Prof

Professor Keertan Dheda is a hospital-based general physician, pulmonologist, and a critical care specialist who heads up the Division of Pulmonology at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town.

He is a South African National Research Foundation ‘A’-rated clinician scientist and has professorial appointments at the University of Cape Town and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is Head of the Division of Pulmonology at the University of Cape Town, and past president of the South African Thoracic Society. His research work has focussed on respiratory infections including TB.

His clinical interests include interventional pulmonology, infections in the ICU, and airways diseases (asthma and COPD). He is the Head of the Interventional Pulmonology Programme at Groote Schuur and UCT Academic Hospital, which incorporates endobronchial ultrasound guided mediastinal biopsy, fibre optic pleural biopsy, and lung cryobiopsy, and is the only structured programme in Africa to undertake and offer bronchial thermoplasty, a novel new airway-orientated heat treatment for asthma.

He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards including the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Scientific Award, the 2018 European Union Scientific Leadership Award, and the 2019 SA MRC Platinum Research Award. He has been profiled in The Lancet and serves on several national and international academic and advisory bodies, including the editorial boards of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Lancet Respiratory Medicine. He has published over 300 papers, has a Scopus H index of 65, and is a co-inventor on 6 patents related to diagnostics and vaccines.
