SERVICES
An exceptional feature of our hospital is our multidisciplinary approach to patients and their care.
UCT Hospital's teams of medical specialists are involved in various multidisciplinary units, practices and services. For example, we have a rehabilitation unit (acute neuro & spinal injuries), a gastro-intestinal clinic and a kidney & dialysis centre, to mention but a few.
There are also practices in gynaecology, neurology, orthopaedic surgery, urology, cardiology, endocrinology and reproductive medicine.
In addition, services cover many conditions including breast cancer, cystic fibrosis, transplantation, incontinence, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, thyroid disorders, pituitary disorders, high-risk anaesthesia and infertility.
The hospital is continually establishing additional units and practices to best our patients' needs.

INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Our ICU is lead by a highly experienced critical care specialist who uses a team-based approach to clinical ICU management. Skilled consultants and senior registrars provide 24-hour on site medical cover. The 12-bed Unit has modern ICU equipment and is geared to provide individualised care to severely ill, multiple-organ failure and specialised surgery. |

REHABILITATION UNIT
Comprehensive physical and cognitive functionality of all patients with spinal fractures and spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, major joint replacement and fractures, amputation and orthopaedic problems. The experienced interdisciplinary team provides a continuum of care in a single, well-equipped rehabilitation facility. The Unit provides modern stroke management as well as long and short term rehabilitation. Programmes are tailored to the specific needs by resident doctors who are regarded as the best in the country of each individual patient and the patient's family is actively involved in education and care. |
GYNAECOLOGY PRACTICE
The services offered by this practice include general gynaecology, specialised gynaecology surgery (e.g. abdominal, laparoscopic and specialised oncology surgery), colposcopy service for the management of abnormal pap smears and menopausal management (including bone mineral density and mammography). |

NEUROSURGERY PRACTICE
Each member of this specialist team has developed his own area of interest and expertise. The practice provides the full range of neurosurgical procedures. These include spasticity, epilepsy, congenital neurological malformations, paediatric brain tumours, childhood head injuries, skull-base surgery, diseases of the pituitary gland and spinal surgery. The neurosurgeons also perform minimally invasive surgery (e.g. endovascular therapy, ventriculoscopy for hydrocephalus). |
REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE PRACTICE
The gynaecologists who work in this practice have a special interest in infertility. However they also offer general gynaecology, gynaecological endoscopy, menopausal medicine, recurrent pregnancy losses and family planning services. |

GASTRO-INTESTINAL PRACTICE
This team specialises in the treatment of surgical diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract as well as the liver, pancreas and bile duct. The surgeons also perform minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical techniques.They are widely acknowledged as the leading liver surgery team in South Africa, having performed over 200 successful liver resections. |

THYROID CLINIC
Using a team approach this clinic provides a comprehensive assessment of patients with thyroid dysfunction. The multidisciplinary team includes an endocrinologist, endocrine surgeon, nuclear radiologist and oncologist. These doctors have the skills and knowledge required to efficiently manage thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, drug-induced thyroid dysfunction, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. |

PITUITARY CLINIC
This clinic is designed to efficiently provide a comprehensive assessment of patients with pituitary dysfunction. It is run by a multidisciplinary team comprising of an endocrinologist, specialist pituitary surgeon, ENT surgeon and oncologist. These academic doctors work at Groote Schuur Hospital and collectively provide a multi-faceted, modern approach to the management of pituitary tumours and pituitary dysfunction. |
