MYTHS
One of the challenges facing UCT Hospital is to dispel some myths that have developed. Here we shed light on some of the most common ones:
Myth: UCT Hospital is part of Groote Schuur Hospital.
UCT Hospital leases totally refurbished premises on the Groote Schuur complex, but is not part of GSH. Our private facility is completely separate. As a public/private enterprise, we co-operate with our neighbour as much as possible as part of our efforts to provide cost effective health care, but there is no financial link.
Myth: Having close ties with a medical school means that medical students care for patients at UCT Hospital.
Definitely not. Students only accompany professors on teaching rounds. All the experienced doctors who see and care for our patients are fully qualified and highly skilled. The majority of our medical experts have many years of experience behind them and many are academic professors at UCT Medical School who have received international recognition for their work. In addition, they have the backing of extensive skills, research-based knowledge and academic colleagues from UCT Medical School. So you can rest assured you will receive care from some of the finest medical minds in South Africa.
Most of our doctors also superspecialise within their particular discipline. So, for example, you will find an orthopaedic surgeon who only performs surgery of the hand, while a neurosurgeon is dedicated to doing spinal surgery.
We focus on using our excellent doctors, facilities and equipment to provide top quality care in a comfortable environment.
