Watt James, Dr

MMed Orth (SUN), FC Orth (SA), MBChB (Pret)

Dr James Watt was born in Cape Town, grew up in Pretoria and returned to his roots in 2010. After completing his community service in the North West, Dr Watt joined the South African Military Health Services and completed his orthopaedic specialist training at Stellenbosch University in 2015.

During his time specialising, Dr Watt was the last Stellenbosch registrar to complete the now discontinued multicentre spine surgery rotation, spending time at Tygerberg’s neurosurgery and orthopaedic spine departments, as well as working at Groote Schuur’s Acute Spinal Cord Injury unit catering for all major spine trauma patients from across the Western Cape.

After finishing his postgraduate training, he completed a fellowship in spine surgery led by Professor Robert Dunn, head of spine- and orthopaedic services at Groote Schuur Hospital. Dr Watt is still involved in the academic sector and is a part-time Spine Surgery Consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital, where he consults and operates on a weekly basis.

Dr Watt has given numerous podium presentations on academic research and is part of a tight-knit group of Cape Town spine surgeons that meet weekly to discuss cases at the combined Groote Schuur Hospital Spine meeting. In addition to training up-and-coming orthopaedic and neurosurgeons, these meetings present difficult cases from state and private, where a multi-member approach in decision making is of the utmost importance. This service is of immeasurable value to our patients as they essentially get an all-for-one deal.

Apart from being a well-rounded general orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Watt has a special interest in all aspects of spine surgery in young and old.
