Hip, Pelvis and Acetabulum Reconstruction, Orthopaedic Fracture Surgery

After completing his undergraduate training at the then University of Natal, he did his internship at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth and Community Service at Bisho and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals in the Eastern Cape.

This compulsory period was followed by a 1 year stint back in Livingstone Hospital as a Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery where his love of the specialty really blossomed and the early interest in the subject was nurtured carefully by Drs MV Ngcelwane, R Van Der Linden and L Bazylczuk.

He then spent a year in England working in various NHS and private sector hospitals. The other half of his stay was spent travelling continental Europe.

He returned to South Africa in 2004 to commence postgraduate specialist training at the University of Cape Town. Here he was trained by some of the country’s leading orthopaedic surgeons and professors. He was very impressed by the Cape Town method and tradition that when an opportunity arose to join the full-time academic staff he grabbed it with both hands.

After obtaining his fellowship qualification in Orthopaedic Surgery he spent some time in Jerusalem, Israel at the Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital and at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, USA as an AO Gordon Siboto Travelling Fellow in Pelvis and Acetabular Trauma Surgery. This was under the tutelage of world famous Professors Rami Mosheiff and David Helfet respectively.

He returned to Cape Town in 2010 to take up his current position at Groote Schuur Hospital and University of Cape Town.

He maintains a strong academic interest as a Professor at the University of Cape Town and has presented numerous papers at local and international peer reviewed orthopaedic meetings.
He is also a reviewer for the South African Orthopaedic Journal.

As a faculty member of both AO Trauma South Africa and AO Trauma Europe he has chaired and organised local training courses for surgeons and theatre scrub sisters, as well as presented lectures and practical demonstrations to local and international audiences.

His fields of expertise and research include:

  • Hip replacement and fracture surgery.
  • Pelvis and Acetabulum fracture reconstruction.
  • Orthopaedic management of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.
  • Orthopaedic management of polytraumatised patients.
  • Orthopaedic management of gunshot injuries.
