Brink Johan, Prof

Prof Johan Brink is a certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon by the HPCSA.

He is the Director of Clincal services in the Chris Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He has a broad range of interests within cardiothoracic surgery as mentioned above. He is heavily involved in cardiothoracic teaching and training and is keen on developing sustainable cardiac centres in Africa and in developiing more widely available valve repair expertise in Africa.

Brief biographical sketch.

  • Early medical career and military service in variety of disciplines in hospitals in South Africa and Namibia.
  • Commenced Cardiothoracic Surgery training in St Louis Missouri USA in 1982
  • Completed Cardiothoracic Surgery training at Groote Schuur (GSH) and Red Cross Children’s (RXH) Hospitals and the University of Cape Town under Christiaan Barnard and his successors: 1984 to 1988.
  • Awarded the Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in 1988 FCS (Cardthor) (SA)
  • Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at UCT, GSH and RXH since 1988.
  • Director of Heart Transplantation since 1993.
  • Associate Professorship 2003.
  • Since 2004: Principal Specialist and Director of Clinical Services in the Dept of Cardiothoracic Surgery UCT and its associate academic hospitals – Groote Schuur, Red Cross Children’s, and UCT Private Academic Hospitals.

Has presented at congresses nationally and internationally and has trained around 20 cardiothoracic surgeons.

Ambitions:

To assist in developing sustainable cardiac centres in Africa and to enable valve repair surgery in Africa to be more widely available.
