Dr Stella Botha is a Physician / Rheumatologist currently practicing at Netcare UCT Private Academic Hospital, Cape Town. She has expertise in the diagnosis and management of a large number of rheumatological conditions, including musculoskeletal disorders and systemic immune mediated conditions, such as Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Gout, Psoriatic Arthritis, Spondylarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, SLE, Systemic Sclerosis, Polymyositis and Vasculitis.

 

Her clinical services include in-patient hospital consultations and outpatient care for patients with rheumatic conditions. She is experienced in doing diagnostic and therapeutic joint aspirations and injections as well as providing biological treatment for specific rheumatological conditions. She is also a qualified musculoskeletal sonographer performing musculoskeltal ultrasound investigations.

 

Dr Stella Botha studied medicine at the University of Stellenbosch. After doing her internship, she moved to the Netherlands where she did her clinical training and completed her specialisation in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at the Leiden University Medical Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands. She was granted an EU ARTICULUM Fellowship to do research on osteoarthritis at the department of Rheumatology at the Descartes University and Cochin Hospital in Paris, France. She has published many peer-reviewed papers in national and international literature and finished her PhD degree on assessment and determinants of disease progression in osteoarthritis at the departments of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology in Leiden, the Netherlands. After working as a specialist in the Netherlands, she returned to South Africa in 2014 and currently works as a senior specialist in the department of Rheumatology at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. In addition, she holds a senior lecturer post at the University of Cape Town, and is actively involved in teaching and training of medical students, senior registrars, and physician specialists.
