Dr Katherine Antel is a specialist physician and clinical haematologist. She is currently employed at UCT as a senior lecturer and is working on her PhD in the diagnosis of lymphoma. She is the recipient of two prestigious research grants: a Discovery Foundation Award and the Fogarty Fellowship (in association with Harvard University). Using these grants and working in collaboration with surgeons and infectious disease specialists, she aims to develop an algorithmic approach to lymphadenopathy in a TB-endemic area that will aid in the early diagnosis of lymphoma.

Dr Antel has clinical experience in the treatment of benign and malignant blood disorders, as well as bone marrow transplant. She has a particular interest in the treatment of lymphoma.

Conditions to refer

  • Undiagnosed haematological abnormalities, usually picked up with an abnormal FBC, symptoms of a cytopenia, abnormal coagulation or lymphadenopathy
  • Lymphoma and leukaemia
  • Multiple myeloma / suspected myeloma (MGUS, SMM)
  • Benign haematological problems associated with HIV: ITP, TTP, haemolytic anaemias
  • Bleeding or clotting disorders
